Synopsis
In an era where superhero franchises dominate the box office, Bruce Willis' 2000 film Unbreakable has resurfaced, captivating modern audiences and reclaiming its place in the cinematic spotlight.
In a cinematic landscape now dominated by superhero franchises, Bruce Willis’ acclaimed 2000 film Unbreakable has resurfaced, making a mark on modern audiences once again.
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Unbreakable is now streaming on Hulu, offering viewers a nostalgic return to a time when superhero films followed a different and unorthodox path, as mentioned in a report by Collider.
Long before the likes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reigned supreme, this movie presented a fresh, grounded take on the superhero genre.
Starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, Unbreakable became a unique exploration of comic book lore at a time when the genre was not nearly as prevalent as it is today.
Shyamalan’s dark, gritty style, combined with Willis’ quiet portrayal of a man struggling with his hidden powers, left a lasting impression on fans of the genre.

Superhero Films before MCU
Released in 2000, Unbreakable came hot on the heels of Shyamalan’s box-office hit The Sixth Sense. While that film showcased his talent for suspense and psychological thrillers, Unbreakable shifted towards a superhero narrative with a haunting and emotional touch. The film introduced audiences to David Dunn (played by Bruce Willis), the lone survivor of a tragic train accident who slowly uncovers his superhuman abilities.
Samuel L. Jackson portrays Elijah Price, a mysterious character who believes David is meant for greater things, and whose obsession with comic books fuels the story’s mythology.
At a time when superhero movies were rare and untraditional, Unbreakable distinguished itself by remaining grounded in reality. The film focuses on the everyday struggles of David Dunn—his broken marriage, his mundane job, and the strained relationship with his son—as he grapples with his unique abilities.

This human-centered approach made Unbreakable stand out from its contemporaries and set it apart from the spectacle-driven superhero blockbusters of today, as mentioned in a report by Movieweb.
